I was in my 7th grade classroom when the news of the 9/11 attacks broke. I remember the television cart being wheeled into the classroom and watching the news. It’s one of those moments that I will never forget. It’s been over a decade now since that day, and yet, in my mind the events still feel so… fresh. As if they just happened. It’s no surprise then that there are so many artists out there reflecting on that day. The 9/11 Memorial website has a whole section dedicated to artwork. Then there’s this article that brings up the question of how much 9/11 defines young artists.
I can’t speak for others, but I do feel like a post 9/11 artist. The events of that day did define who I became, led me to where I am today and most certainly affected what I think about and therefore what my work is about. I spent quite a chunk of time working on my own 9/11 artwork, 09 11 2001. On today’s anniversary, I thought it would be fitting to share some other artists’ takes on the tragedy that took place that day.
