A different kind of Art

There are certain things that I am simply not talented in (at?).  One of those things is music.  Despite my ceaseless attempts to be good at it, it just doesn’t seem to come naturally to me.  So, I must live vicariously through others and this others happens to be my little brother.  This weekend may or may not be the last marching band performance of the season (as it may or may not be the last football game), so I thought I’d share some of my photos and a video of my latest obsession: marching band.

First of all, the precision with which these kids perform is fascinating to me.  The amount of work they put into what they do is apparent.  Second, I love that it is all student led.  The kids are responsible for their own part, they are responsible to their leaders and they are responsible for each other.  There are no teachers or adults leading them, they have to depend on each other.  Also… the uniforms are pretty fabulous. This year they worked on compositions by John Williams, who composed film scores for Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Superman and many more.  Here’s my favorite:

Also, before and after the halftime show, there seemed to be some football going on…

This was a wonderful opportunity for me to get slightly intrusive with my zoom lens :) I’ll be spending my weekend in beautiful Nashville, TN, so I will have a new set of photos coming up next week!
