David Foster Wallace delivered a commencement address to the graduating class of 2005 at Kenyon College and recently a video was made to accompany part of this speech:
This is just part of the speech, but you can listen to the whole speech here. I love the idea of being in the moment, appreciating and noticing the everyday. Appreciating the fact that all the people around us are likely living interesting lives, each of them has a story to tell and that they are worth getting to know. Not allowing our assumptions to keep us from being curious and compassionate towards others. Not taking what we have around us for granted, the ‘this is water’ idea.
The speech makes me think of this quote:
Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
